he Kenya Cultural Centre was born out of an ordinance in 1950 that affirmed a charter established the previous year where the government of the day sought to set up a inter racial cultural space for the use and enjoyment of Kenyan citizens. As it stands, the Cultural Centre is the state’s oldest cultural institution. Its first order of business was to construct the Kenya National Theatre that was opened in 1952 and other buildings were added in 1960. Apart from housing the largest proscenium stage in Kenya, the Cultural Centre is also home to the Ukumbi Mdogo- Concert Hall, Cheche Art Gallery and several outdoor spaces (Mugumo Coutryard) that are used for various performances and meetings.
